Dr. Hanson shares how the sMap3D™ has made it easier, faster, and more effective to treat patients with severe vision problems.
“The sMap3D was purchased before I joined the practice, but it was one of the reasons I chose this practice, as I wanted to improve my scleral fitting proficiency,” said Dr. Hanson.
The Visionary Optics team spoke with Renée Hanson, OD, from Swagel Wootton Eye Institute, ophthalmology centers with locations in Mesa and Chandler, Arizona. She credits the sMap3D technology with minimizing visits and improving patient outcomes.
“It has greatly reduced my chair time, and the consultation team is superb,” said Dr. Hanson.

Case Study
The Challenge
This patient is severely nearsighted, but has never been able to wear contact lenses due to severe dry eye and ocular surface disease. He was taking steroids, artificial tears, and ocular antihistamines with no improvement. His best corrected vision with his glasses when I met him was 20/30 OD and 20/50 OS due to severe corneal SPK. He also had active limbal neovascularization with very red angry eyes.
The Solution & Results
We decided to try the sMap3D and fit him with scleral lenses, both for his myopia (-14.00) and his dry eye disease.
The entire fitting took only three visits, and the patient’s vision improved to a perfect 20/20 in both eyes, with dramatic improvement in the ocular surface. He is now off all his drops, the corneas are clear, and the neovascularization has regressed. He was ecstatic.
