Two Curves with One Vision: Toric Curves on the Front and Back Surface
Visionary Optics’ new Europa Tangent lens design simplifies the fitting process by using a three-zone fitting system — allowing changes to be made to the central, limbal, or scleral zone of the design without affecting other lens parameters (in 50 µm increments, up to + 400 µm).

A 68 y/o female patient was seen by Dr. Greg DeNaeyer, and she presented with significant corneal scars in her right eye. Her best-corrected spectacle vision was 20/60 in that eye. Fortunately, she was 20/20 in the left eye. Her corneal topography demonstrated irregularity in her right eye and scleral profilometry revealed 400 microns of scleral toricity in the oblique 30-degree meridian.
Dr. DeNaeyer fit her with a Europa Tangent using Optimum Infinite material (Dk 180) because she also had mild guttae. Using a spherical power her vision improved to 20/25. He also performed an aberrometry over the lens and it revealed -1.25 Diopters of residual astigmatism. Since the lens was stabilized with 400 microns of back surface toricity of the peripheral curves, the front surface toricity was added. Her final vision was 20/20 with the scleral lens that provided stable vision with the scleral lens.
This case demonstrates how both back surface and front surface toricity can easily be added to the Europa Tangent lens, correcting vision and maintaining a stable fit without rotation of the lens.
