Visionary Optics consultant Megan Schwarzinger loves making a difference in peoples’ lives with the lenses she designs. Megan has worked as an ophthalmic technician and assistant for years in both general and specialty clinic environments. She became a certified ophthalmic assistant and certified ophthalmic scribe in 2017 and joined Visionary Optics as a specialty lens consultant in 2019.

Q&A with Consultant Megan Schwarzinger

 

What is the best part of your job as a Consultant at Visionary Optics?

Being part of a team that changes lives daily. I especially love when a doctor tells me that a patient who is brand new to scleral lenses liked the diagnostic lens so much, they asked if they could take it home. I hear that all the time, and it is one of my favorite things. I also really like collaborating with other consultants and doctors and establishing professional relationships with the doctors, and then using the sMap3D to design lenses based off data.

 

Is there a recent scleral lens fit success story that stands out to you that you can share?

I have two success stories that stand out:

• One doctor told me about an 80-year-old patient who was suffering from dry eye. She had done countless treatments that did not work and had been miserable for years with her eyes. And after only one week of wearing scleral lenses, she’s feeling a lot better and she was able to stop using eye drops for the first time in years.

 

• Another patient was 14 years old and had a corneal scarring from trauma. The patient had 20/400 vision and having trouble in school because of it when they first came into the office. After a successful lens fit, the patient is at 20/40 vision, which is a huge improvement.

 

Do you have any advice to doctors on how to make scleral lens fitting as successful as possible for the patients? 

I would say the number one thing is staying informed on new designs and techniques, because technology is always changing. There’s always new data, new studies, even new terminology, so staying up to date is really helpful. As a scleral lens partner, the Visionary Optics team strives to keep our doctors as up-to-date as possible. When doing remakes, sending pictures and detailed documentation to the consultant is also important. And for doctors who are treating patients managing dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), keeping that at bay will improve outcomes.
