A doctor recently contacted Visionary Optics, worried about a patient’s scleral lens order. Due to a procedure, the shape of the patient’s eye was changing, and she was concerned that her lens would no longer fit correctly. We were happy to reassure her that our scleral lenses have completely customizable designs, so we can offer the best fit for every eye shape. And our expert Consultants are always ready to answer questions or explain how our lenses work.
Advanced Customizable Scleral Lenses
Visionary Optics’ most popular scleral lenses, Europa and Latitude, are both fully customizable:
- The Europa lens is designed to fit a wide variety of corneal and scleral shapes. It can be fit both diagnostically & with scleral shape data and adjusted in four key ways: quadrant-specific landing zones, multi-meridian landing zones, toric landing zones, and spherical landing zones.
- The Latitude lens is a premium freeform customized lens that allows for an exact fit to the ocular, corneal, and scleral surfaces. Designed from extensive sMap3D™ topography data — covering more than 1 million points — the Latitude lens provides a completely contoured, unique fit for each patient. It is ideal for more complicated fits, such as those involving more irregularity, scleral toricity, asymmetric keratoconus/ectasias, or pingueculas.
Visionary Optics Lenses in Action
Many patients who were able to succeed with Visionary Optics scleral lenses went through multiple failed attempts with other lens designs in the past. Some were even told that they would never be able to wear contact lenses because of their vision history. Here are just a few patient success stories that prove anyone can find the right fit:
Stephanie Frankel, OD, from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida:
Dr. Frankel’s patient had a history of bilateral HSV keratitis that left significant corneal scarring, neurotrophic keratopathy, and limbal stem cell deficiency. He had post penetrating keratoplasty in his right eye, as well as a glaucoma drainage implant and scarring from recurring epithelial defects. The patient was fit with Latitude lenses in both eyes, and now has no corneal epithelial defects in his right eye and 20/25 visual rehabilitation in his left eye.
The patient wrote: “My lenses have been working incredibly well; they improved my healing, remain stable and continue to improve. Without a doubt, what Dr. Frankel did to improve my lenses quite literally changed my life and had an outstanding outcome.”
Renée Hanson, OD, from Swagel Wootton Eye Institute, in Mesa and Chandler, Arizona:
Dr. Hanson reported: “A patient of mine was previously piggybacking with RGPs, had constant keratitis and extreme photophobia. He would wear sunglasses 24/7. He came in for his one-week follow-up after his Europa scleral lenses were dispensed with wide-open eyes and greatly reduced photophobia with clear corneas. His lenses fit perfectly! This patient is ecstatic with his new lenses.”
Allison Moir, OD at Bakersfield Eye Institute in California:
Dr. Moir’s patient had unsuccessfully tried GP lenses. He had a bulging PK in the right eye and a nipple cone in the left eye. His right GP fell out frequently, and he didn’t wear a lens in his left eye because his previous doctor “gave up on it.” Dr. Moir fitted the patient with Latitude lenses in both eyes and was amazed by the results.
She said: “I successfully fit the right and left eyes with one lens each. The patient’s vision was 20/20 in the right eye and 20/30 in the left. He was so grateful and pleased with his vision and the comfort of his contact lenses. It was a very rewarding fit.”
