Dr. To shares how the sMap3D™ is improving the speed and precision with which he designs and fits scleral lenses for his patients.
“It makes scleral lens fitting more efficient and accurate, at a reasonable price,” said Dr. To.
The Visionary Optics team spoke with Dr. Eric To from Lumen Optometric in the Los Angeles area about how sMap3D technology has helped him reduce chair time and better address patients’ diverse needs. He first heard about the sMap3D during the Global Specialty Lens Symposium (GSLS), when a colleague’s enthusiastic recommendation motivated him to invest in the technology for his own practice.
“One of the biggest benefits of the sMap3D is that you get a more accurate lens design from the start,” said Dr. To. “This faster initial fit is a key differentiator.”
See how Dr. To used the sMap3D to custom-design a perfect lens for a patient on the first attempt:
I had one specific patient whose sclera required extremely steep landing zones, something my previous lens manufacturer was not able to accommodate. After a few remakes where I was pushing the boundaries of that particular lens design, I was able measure the patient with the sMap3D. The first Europa lens fit perfectly!
Figures 1-2 (OD) and 3-4 (OS) show optimal central, limbal and scleral zone fit with an even simulated fluorescein pattern.
The Visionary Optics family is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. When you have a particularly tough patient, the VO team really leans in to help. My patients and my team always feel like we’re their top priority.
