Dr. Shin shares how the sMap3D™ helped him increase patient satisfaction by delivering better vision and comfort to patients in fewer visits.
“My patients love their lenses,” said Dr. Shin. “The sMap3D takes the guesswork out of scleral fits. I’m able to order precisely-shaped lenses that perfectly fit the eyes of my most challenging patients, including those with corneal transplants, severe keratoconus, blebs, and large pingueculas.”
The Visionary Optics team spoke with David Shin, OD at Gig Harbor Eye Care in Gig Harbor, Washington about how the sMap3D™ has changed how he treats patients. He was frustrated by the number of office visits he needed to give his patients to get comfortable, functional, and well-fitting scleral lenses, when a trusted colleague recommended the sMap3D™.
“Looking back, the old way of fitting scleral lenses seems primitive,” said Dr. Shin. “It’s imprecise and inefficient to fit scleral lenses with only diagnostic trial lenses. I invested in an sMap3D™ after realizing that the only way to quickly and accurately make a perfectly fitting lens is to incorporate eye shape data into the lens manufacturing process.”

Case Study
The Challenge
I recently fit a 58-year-old patient with a history of severe keratoconus OU and a corneal transplant OD. Her referring doctor was unable to achieve stable vision with soft contact lenses and the best vision she was able to achieve was 20/50 OD and 20/25-2 OS. Over the last four years, she had seen many doctors, but was unable to obtain lenses that provided clear vision and felt comfortable.
The Solution
Using the sMap3D to precisely measure her eyes, we minimized the number office visits she needed to achieve a perfectly fitting scleral lens. We were able to finalize the fitting on the first trial for her right eye and the second trial for her left eye.
The Results
Our patient achieved 20/20 vision OD, OS with only a two office visits. This patient was delighted with the fitting experience!
The sMap3D takes the guesswork out of scleral lens work. My patients routinely experience greater comfort and clarity in fewer office visits.
